Part of the Southern Arizona Experiment Station, this 88-acre facility in the Tanque Verde valley houses an equine breeding and training center that includes a breeding shed, 2 covered arenas, 2 outdoor arenas, 48 stalls, and meeting spaces.
About
Thanks to a generous gift from Ruth “Bazy” Tankersley, the Al-Marah Equine Center has become an important facility for equine instruction, research and community engagement at the University of Arizona. The 80-acre working ranch nestled within the foothills of Tucson’s Catalina Mountains was originally developed by Tankersley to breed, train, and market Al-Marah Arabian horses, which are regarded the world over to be among the premier Arabian lineages.
The horses at the facility are owned by the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences and are used to support the College of Agriculture, Life, and Environmental Sciences equine science program. All the animal care services are provided by the Arizona Experiment Station staff under the protocols prescribed but the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at the University of Arizona.
Frequently asked questions
The Al-Marah Equine Center does not provide boarding to the general public. The facility boards horses solely for University of Arizona departments or colleges for use in equine programming and teaching.
The 2023 daily rate/horse is $9.25. *Rates are subject to review and may be adjusted annually to reflect current market conditions.

Race Track Industry Program
Our Al-Marah Equine Center is the place where Race Track Industry Program students in the U of A College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences learn about breeding, young horse development, as well as horse sales. As part of the program, the horses are born here, students help raise them and sell them at a yearling sale.
